At 68 years old, Navy veteran Thomas (‘72-76) found himself facing a challenge that many might overlook, but one that weighed heavily on him. That challenge was an overgrown yard.
Living alone and physically unable to maintain his lawn, the tall grass surrounding his home had become a daily reminder of a task that needed to be finished. He wanted to take pride in his home, just as he had once taken pride in his service. But without support, that felt increasingly out of reach.

Ever wondered what $10 could do? It can save the lives of veterans like the one you're reading about in this story. Donate $10 a month and help us reach veterans before a crisis occurs. Together, we can do better. Our veterans deserve better.
We reached out to Claudia with Keep Odessa Beautiful, a community partner that connects volunteers with local residents in need of help with lawn maintenance. In a matter of days, help arrived and Thomas's lawn was taken care of. The volunteer who cut the grass also said he would return to keep it maintained.
This simple act of kindness is a powerful reminder of what happens when communities come together through partnership and purpose. It’s more than just cutting grass, it’s reminding our veterans that they are not forgotten. Thomas told us that it looks so much better and it’s such a huge relief.
