Financial Support Provided to Grieving Veteran Spouse

Updated: May 3, 2023

Losing a spouse is one of the most heart-breaking tragedies life can throw at you. Though it is often one of the biggest stressors, one of the last things you want to think about while grieving a loved one is the financial burden that comes along with it. This was the case for Army Spouse Linda Collins*, dealing with the recent passing of her husband Allen, Army veteran (’77-’84).

Linda lived on a limited income, depending exclusively on social security benefits. Her late husband was also only receiving social security and did not have any life insurance policies in place. Linda was distraught, not only from losing her spouse but also facing potentially crippling funeral costs. It was then, after being referred to by the VA, that Linda turned to Permian Warrior Partnership (PWP) for support.

PWP Case Coordinator Breanna (Bre) Durner began gathering resources once she learned about Linda’s situation. Bre researched local funeral homes, veteran funds, and support programs. The first fund she reviewed was for unaccompanied veterans, so unfortunately, Linda’s situation did not qualify. Bre then reached out to local partners to see if anyone could assist. She was eventually put in touch with a funeral home and chapel in Big Springs, TX, that wanted to help. The funeral home ensured Linda that they would cover Allen’s transportation and cremation costs.

Bre has continued to work with Linda to obtain all of Allen’s military service records and resources available to her. Linda was overwhelmingly grateful to PWP and those in the veteran community willing to help her in her time of need. We hope this support will give Linda the closure she needs to resume her grieving process.
